Indiana Bones Key West Dog
Indiana Bones, Key West Dog

My  Maltese, Indiana Bones, is small and well behaved and he loves to go places with me as much as I like taking him places so we are pretty much always together. For this reason, my husband has taken to calling him my daemon (like in the Golden Compass). One of the nice things about Key West for me is that it is a rather  dog friendly place. A number of rental houses, inns, restaurants and shops will welcome you and your pup heartily.

When walking around Duval Street, many of the shops receive Indie and I. Even prominent art galleries like Wyland and Lik and upscale shops like Coach and Diamonds International welcome us warmly. Of course there are a few places that don’t take well to the canine persuasion, but hey, I guess not everyone can be a dog lover.

My favorite dog friendly restaurant is a tough decision for me. Indie does not seem to have a preference here. I guess I’d have to say that Croissants de France located at 816 Duval Street is my favorite breakfast spot to take my pooch. The seating outside in the winter, spring, and fall is particularly pleasant under the old Spanish Lime Tree. And the food is always awesome! Indie loves their bacon and eggs. For lunch or dinner  I would say it is a tie between Dante’s on Caroline Street and the Hogfish Bar and Grill on Front Street on Stock Island. These casual places both have good food. The burger at Dante’s is awesome and the Hogfish sandwich at the aptly named Hogfish is amazing.

As for Indie’s favorite dog store, well okay, my favorite dog store, that would be Dog 30 located at 1025 White Street. The owner, Scott Wooster, is always there to greet his clients, both the two legged and four legged kind. He carries all natural dog and cat food as well as a fun assortment of clothing, bags, beds, and many other things that  your pet may need. Scott is a big reason that this is my favorite pet store. He takes the time to talk to his clients, make suggestions, and treats them like friends. But I also like this shop because it is not a typical pet store; Dog 30 has a pleasant layout so I am not constantly tripping over stuff.

If you and your dog are planning a visit to Key West and are looking for a place to stay call us at 1-888-362-3474. We would be happy to to arrange a stay for you at one of the pet friendly properties here in Key West.
