Bier Boutique Review

So, this is a bit strange for me, but today I am going to be writing about a delivery experience. I have driven by the Bier Boutique a bunch of times and I have been determined to try it out. Today, we decided to have them deliver lunch to our office for Foodie Friday!

About 40 minutes after placing a fairly large food order by phone, we got a knock on the door with a delivery driver from the Bier Boutique laden with bags of fresh, hot food. I have to say that the order was not cheap at $75 plus tip. Was it worth the price? Well…

To start, we ordered the beer candied bacon and the tater tots. As if bacon in and of itself was not good enough already, they candy it which transforms the bacon into a sweet and savory treat. The tater tots come two ways; the house-made tater tots are loaded with cheddar cheese, bacon crumbles, Sriracha cream, and chives. And the coney tots are piled with their homemade chili, cheddar cheese, sour cream and chives. While I did like the tots, I would probably not order them again because I absolutely loved the fresh cut french fries that came with the sandwiches, and one fried potato side is more than enough for this girl. The Sriracha cream was tasty, offering just enough spice to give the tots a small kick. The chili was yummy; I could see myself ordering a bowl of this on one of our very rare cold Key West days.

Lila and Steven both ordered the Mad River TBLT which is a sandwich of fresh grilled turkey, candied bacon, tomato, onion, lettuce, baby swiss, and honey peppercorn vinaigrette on toasted oat nut bread.  This sandwich looked amazing and tasted pretty good too. Really loved the addition of the candied bacon for a different twist.

After shoving my face full or fried potatoes I tried to be somewhat healthy by going with the big salad with grilled chicken. My salad was loaded with spinach, nuts, cranberries, feta cheese, and a honey peppercorn vinaigrette. The chicken was skewered and simply grilled and served on the side. The salad was very good and made outstanding by the dressing that was the perfect combination of spicy and sweet. The chicken  on its own would have been a bore but with the salad and dressing was a nice addition.

For dessert we shared a decadent brownie that was chewy and rich, just as a brownie should be.

Now that we have tried a huge portion of the menu, I think we could narrow down the next order and eat a bit more affordably, probably for around $40 plus tip for three of us. We were all impressed by the food, and the fact that they deliver is certainly a bonus.

Now, you may have noticed that the name of this place is the Bier Boutique, yet I did not write about beer at all so far. That is because even though I do like a good cider once in a while, I do not drink at work. If I did I could promise you that I would never get anything accomplished! With that said, they do have a pretty extensive beer menu with several interesting craft brews. So you can enjoy a delicious meal with a cold one. Sounds like a pretty perfect pairing to me!

Harbourview Cafe at the Pier House Resort & Caribbean Spa | Review

Delicious creamy conch chowder from the Harbourview Cafe located at the Pier House Resort and Caribbean Spa.

Delicious creamy conch chowder from the Harbourview Cafe located at the Pier House Resort and Caribbean Spa.

Sunday my husband and I had friends come into town, so we decided to take them downtown for lunch. We wanted someplace with a nice view and good food. My friend Lee works at the Pier House Resort and he has told me on numbers occasions that the food at the Harbourview Cafe is really good. I thought that it would be worth it to give the cafe a whirl, especially since I send a lot of our clients to stay at the Pier House. Even with the signs pointing the way throughout the property, walking through the resort to find the cafe was a little bit confusing. But it was beautifully landscaped and we were rewarded by a quiet spot next to the resort’s beach overlooking the Key West Harbor. It was a very picturesque setting. We opted to sit outside because the weather was amazing, but there is indoor seating available as well.

Our waiter’s name was Ash and he brought over menus for us to peruse. We all were brought water; then Jennifer ordered a glass of wine, the guys both ordered beers, and I ordered a rare Bloody Mary. When the drinks were brought out we then ordered our food. Everyone but me asked for the burger. I decided that I had to get something different for a better cross section of the menu so I went with their salad with charbroiled sea scallops. The guys also ordered a soup each; Nate ordered the special which was a pumpkin coconut curry and Steven ordered the creamy conch chowder.

A note about the Bloody Mary. I am by no means a connoisseur of these drinks, but I do enjoy them on occasion. This one was not bad. It had a consistency that was a little thin plus a lot of horseradish; I would have been really impressed with it if it had come with a shrimp on the side in addition to the olives as  that would have paired perfectly together. Of course that would also raise the price of the drink I am sure, but I think it would have been worth it.

Back to the food…

The soups were amazing and both guys devoured them, although Jen and I luckily both got a taste of our respective husbands’ soups before the bowls were clean. The burgers, served with fries, were big and they looked amazing. I did not taste them but Jenn, Nate, and Steven all raved about them, and they were so big that nobody entirely finished them either. My salad was gorgeous, piled with fresh greens, ripe tomatoes, dried fruit, and a really delicious basil vinaigrette. There were 4 scallops on top of the salad as well that were perfectly cooked. And there were also a couple of pieces of goat cheese crostini on the side. All together it was a perfect combination and a great choice for a light and delicious lunch.

Ash was quiet at first, but he was a good and attentive server. We asked him if the music could be lowered and he immediately complied which made it much easier for us to converse with each other. And we really enjoyed he view of the harbor and watching all of the beautiful tall ships sailing by as well as the parade of sleek Dream Catcher Charters boats going by as they picked up and dropped off clients at the Pier House dock.

I am very pleased to report that the Harbourview Cafe at the Pier House Resort is an awesome place for one to enjoy a delicious lunch with an amazing view. Breakfast and dinner are also served here. The dinner menu is very similar to the lunch menu. And  the breakfast menu looks amazing; I may have to make this our new breakfast spot!

Firefly | Review

The outside of Firefly Restaurant on Petronia Street in Key West.

The outside of Firefly Restaurant on Petronia Street in Key West.

I recently went to a private event at Firefly which is located in what used to be Columbian Grace Restaurant on Petronia Street, just down the street from Blue Heaven and the Creperie. Typically when I attend these types of events the food served is not necessarily indicative to the usual fare. However, Firefly actually had tapas sized portions of selections from their actual menu out so I was very excited to be able to try several items.

The first thing that I tried was their homemade mac and cheese. This was decadent and delicious, and I was tempted to go back for a third helping.

Their BLT made with house made bacon was amazing, if you are a lover of BLT’s. The crusts were cut off of the white bread and the bacon was crispy and not chewy which would have been a no go for me.

I did not try the deviled eggs, but they must have been great because my hubby helped himself to about six of these.

The jalapeño cornbread was amazing; the jalapeños were not overbearing but gave it only a slight bite which even someone that does not do spicy can handle.

The BBQ duck wings were tasty, and a nice departure from the usual chicken wings.

Firefly also has a very nice selection of beers and wines to choose from at their bar.

The inside of the restaurant is beautifully remodeled and it offers both indoor and outdoor seating. I have to say that even inside it was extremely hot and somewhat uncomfortable, but I am hoping that it was only because the entire venue was taken up by this event and they purposely had all of the doors open. Based on my experience I think that I would forgo eating here again in the summertime and wait until the weather cools down so that the experience would be more bearable.

Firefly is open from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm Monday through Friday and 9:00 am to 10:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Brunch is served until 3:00 pm every day. Drinks and snacks are available at the bar from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Supper is served from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Taste of Key West 2014

Volunteer and attendee of the Taste of Key West Event.

Volunteer and attendee of the Taste of Key West Event.

We have friends visiting from out of town this week so we decided to give them a real taste of Key West and take them to The Taste of Key West even that was held last night from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. The event benefits AIDS Help and is a huge draw to local and visiting foodies.

Forty restaurants from Abbondanza to Thai Life had booths set up serving a tapas sized serving of one of two house specialties for attendees to taste and enjoy. On top of that, over 150 beer and wine vendors were serving up tastes of their nectar to those 21 and older.

Held at the Truman Waterfront, you could either drive to the location or take the Old Town Trolley from one of the several resorts that they had set up as stops so that you did not have to fight for parking.

Entrance to the event was free, but if you wanted to taste anything you had to buy tickets, with each tasting costing a different amount of tickets. We went in with 75 tickets for six of us and we did not use them all. Partly because by the time we got to the event at 7pm several of the booths were already closing because they ran out of food. Partly because we did not want to wait in ultra long lines that some of the booths like Santiago’s Bodega had. And partly because there were just some things that we flat out did not want, like alcoholic beverages which seemed to be a majority of what was there. (Not that I am against drinking, but we had a child with us and we did have to drive home.)

We sampled the meatballs and sausage from Abbondanza, the duck liver pate from Pisces, barbecue from Roostica, cupcakes from Key West Cakes, mac and cheese from Firefly, and seafood from Pinchers. I think we may have tried a few other things too, but I started to lose track. The barbecue was my favorite of the samplings, but Abbondanza did inspire me to make my famous sauce with meatballs and sausage for dinner tonight.

I am glad that I did not bring Indiana Bones as the crowds were a bit overwhelming in some areas. At one point my husband and I were separated from the rest of our group and we were texting each other to see where we all were. And speaking of the crowd, our friends really got to see some of the local color. Everyone from local business people to drag queens were there to volunteer or enjoy.

Anyway, if you are here for next year’s Taste, you now know what to expect. I think it is a great way for visitors to check out several restaurants that they would not normally have time to do on a shortened stay on the island.
