Kim’s Kuban | Review

The chicken soup as served at Kim’s Kuban.

After a busy morning in the office, we were starving. Delivery to Stock Island is limited, and tired of the same old, we decided to try something different. Having never eaten at Kim’s Cuban, we gave them a call and placed out order.  Lila ordered the chicken soup and a cheese toast and I ordered a chicken burrito and a homemade rice pudding. It seemed like forever before they showed up with the food, but that was probably be because we were famished! Answering phones and emails is hard work!

Unpacking the meal, the chicken soup was a really nice sized portion and the burrito was enormous. But the rice pudding was missing. We gave them a call and about 15 minutes later they were back with another bag containing the rice pudding; more on that later!

Lila said that her chicken soup was very good, and liked the addition of cilantro to it. I personally love cilantro, so I am sure that I would have love that soup! And you cannot go wrong with Cuban bread with butter and cheese; this was delicious. Try adding jalapeños if you like spicy!!

My burrito tasted fine and was very filling. I only ate about a quarter of it, it was so large. But I was disappointed with this choice. It was basically a rice burrito with a very little bit of beans and chicken mixed in.

Now, for the rice pudding… I opened the bag and the homemade rice pudding was not homemade at all. I was kind of upset so I didn’t even end up eating it. Lila ate it two days later and she said that it tasted good but it had the consistency of clay and that it gave her a stomach ache. I guess I dodged a bullet there.

For the amount of food that you get for the price it is a pretty good deal for breakfast or lunch.

Blue Macaw Island Eats and Bar | Review

Beautiful fountain in front of the Blue Macaw.

Beautiful fountain in front of the Blue Macaw.

I was out shopping with my girlfriend Dianne the other day when we decided to grab a quick bite for lunch. Neither one of us had eaten at the new Blue Macaw Island Eats and Bar yet which is located at the entrance to Bahama Village, and as it looked so inviting we just had to try it out. As we walked into this little outdoor island oasis, hearing the tropically infused musical stylings of the fabulous Frankendread, we were instantly transported to vacation mode. (For those on you actually on vacation, this would make a great day drinking spot!)

Here is Frankendread playing for the diners.

We were seated at a small table near the bar and as we perused the menu there were several things that caught our attention. But, being girls out to lunch we opted for a couple of salads. I ordered the Kale Caesar and Dianne ordered the Island Passion. We sipped on our iced teas while listening to Frankendread play his music and we chatted about what a cool little place the Blue Macaw was. We spied their huge Bloody Mary Bar, and since we were so enjoying the atmosphere we decided that we would be bringing the hubbies back for brunch one day soon.

Our salads arrived and they were plated very prettily. But even better they tasted divine. The caesar was your basic caesar but with kale replacing some of the romaine. It was delicious and made a nice change from the typical caesar salad which can get a little boring. Diann’s salad looked like a beautiful tropical explosion. All of the ingredients melded wonderfully tighter and it was quite delicious.

So for about $20, the two of us had a yummy lunch and a fun experience. We are looking forward to our brunch there where we can have fun making our Bloody Mary’s.

El Mocho Restaurant: Review

El Mocho RestaurantI have driven by this place about a million times on my way to West Marine and never thought to try it out, that is until I had some friends mentioned that they had a really enjoyable breakfast there. Today, my friends Pam and Tommy joined me at El Mocho Restaurant for breakfast.

This is a true locals place; we saw several people that we knew enjoying breakfast at this Cuban greasy spoon. It was very busy; however, we did not have to wait for a table. We were able to seat ourselves immediately, and we were brought menus (which are in both Spanish and English) shortly afterwards.

We ordered cafe con leche to start. One just has to order Cuban coffee at a Cuban restaurant! I ordered the special breakfast which costs less than five dollars and consists of two eggs, ham or bacon, and hash browns or grits. Pam ordered a breakfast sandwich on Cuban bread. And Tommy ordered the pancakes with eggs and sausage. It did not take too long for our food to be brought out to us.

The bacon and eggs were good. I was disappointed with the McDonald’s like hash browns, so I ended up getting a bowl of cheesy grits too. The grits were a little runny, but they were loaded with butter and tasted delicious.

The sandwich was a little bland, so Pam ended up lacing it with tons of hot sauce to pep it up. She was also disappointed that the hash browns were not as expected, so she also ordered the cheesy grits.

Tommy’s pancakes were very heavy but delicious, especially after he drowned them in syrup (yum!). And again, the eggs and sausage were good.

The atmosphere is very low key. And the service was very, very slow. At least we were entertained by watching the televisions hanging around the room while waiting so the check and a to go bag. Also, I was annoyed by the seating; I love booth seating, but the seat moved around every time the person sitting on the other side moves.

For the three of us, breakfast was less than $30, plus tip of course. We all decided that the food was good enough and cheap enough to come back in the future for breakfast. Plus, they are conveniently located on Stock Island very close to my office. They also serve breakfast and dinner.

Bien Caribbean Latino Restaurant | Review

Breakfast sandwich and cafe con leche from Bien.

Breakfast sandwich and cafe con leche from Bien.

Located at 1000 Eaton Street, Bien is a very casual eatery with limited outdoor seating. They serve breakfast and lunch. I tried it for breakfast this weekend.

Bien offers many sandwich choices, all made with Cuban bread. They have both sweet and savory options. You go to the counter to order your food and they will wrap up your food to go and bring it out to you at one of the tables outside. I ended up eating on site. It was fun people watching from here, although very noisy with all of the passing traffic.

I ordered what I have dubbed their house sandwich which is toasted and buttered Cuban bread loaded with two fried eggs, hash browns, cartelized onions, melted cheese, sour cream, pickles jalapeños, and fresh cilantro. And you can choose to add your choice of protein (bacon, ham, sausage, steak, shrimp). Of course I went with bacon. I was a little nervous that with so many items there would be a flavor competition, but it was divine and everything melded together perfectly!

And the cafe con leche was also superb. Love getting a really good cup of coffee. That can really make or break a meal sometimes.

After such a surprisingly delicious breakfast, I am looking forward to trying lunch here one day soon too! The Rice and Bean Trio and the Onion Obsession sound delish!!
