Kim’s Kuban | Review

The chicken soup as served at Kim’s Kuban.

After a busy morning in the office, we were starving. Delivery to Stock Island is limited, and tired of the same old, we decided to try something different. Having never eaten at Kim’s Cuban, we gave them a call and placed out order.  Lila ordered the chicken soup and a cheese toast and I ordered a chicken burrito and a homemade rice pudding. It seemed like forever before they showed up with the food, but that was probably be because we were famished! Answering phones and emails is hard work!

Unpacking the meal, the chicken soup was a really nice sized portion and the burrito was enormous. But the rice pudding was missing. We gave them a call and about 15 minutes later they were back with another bag containing the rice pudding; more on that later!

Lila said that her chicken soup was very good, and liked the addition of cilantro to it. I personally love cilantro, so I am sure that I would have love that soup! And you cannot go wrong with Cuban bread with butter and cheese; this was delicious. Try adding jalapeños if you like spicy!!

My burrito tasted fine and was very filling. I only ate about a quarter of it, it was so large. But I was disappointed with this choice. It was basically a rice burrito with a very little bit of beans and chicken mixed in.

Now, for the rice pudding… I opened the bag and the homemade rice pudding was not homemade at all. I was kind of upset so I didn’t even end up eating it. Lila ate it two days later and she said that it tasted good but it had the consistency of clay and that it gave her a stomach ache. I guess I dodged a bullet there.

For the amount of food that you get for the price it is a pretty good deal for breakfast or lunch.

Bier Boutique Review

Island Genn and Lila having lunch at the office.

Island Genn and Lila having lunch at the office.

So, this is a bit strange for me, but today I am going to be writing about a delivery experience. I have driven by the Bier Boutique a bunch of times and I have been determined to try it out. Today, we decided to have them deliver lunch to our office for Foodie Friday!

About 40 minutes after placing a fairly large food order by phone, we got a knock on the door with a delivery driver from the Bier Boutique laden with bags of fresh, hot food. I have to say that the order was not cheap at $75 plus tip. Was it worth the price? Well…

To start, we ordered the beer candied bacon and the tater tots. As if bacon in and of itself was not good enough already, they candy it which transforms the bacon into a sweet and savory treat. The tater tots come two ways; the house-made tater tots are loaded with cheddar cheese, bacon crumbles, Sriracha cream, and chives. And the coney tots are piled with their homemade chili, cheddar cheese, sour cream and chives. While I did like the tots, I would probably not order them again because I absolutely loved the fresh cut french fries that came with the sandwiches, and one fried potato side is more than enough for this girl. The Sriracha cream was tasty, offering just enough spice to give the tots a small kick. The chili was yummy; I could see myself ordering a bowl of this on one of our very rare cold Key West days.

Lila and Steven both ordered the Mad River TBLT which is a sandwich of fresh grilled turkey, candied bacon, tomato, onion, lettuce, baby swiss, and honey peppercorn vinaigrette on toasted oat nut bread.  This sandwich looked amazing and tasted pretty good too. Really loved the addition of the candied bacon for a different twist.

After shoving my face full or fried potatoes I tried to be somewhat healthy by going with the big salad with grilled chicken. My salad was loaded with spinach, nuts, cranberries, feta cheese, and a honey peppercorn vinaigrette. The chicken was skewered and simply grilled and served on the side. The salad was very good and made outstanding by the dressing that was the perfect combination of spicy and sweet. The chicken  on its own would have been a bore but with the salad and dressing was a nice addition.

For dessert we shared a decadent brownie that was chewy and rich, just as a brownie should be.

Now that we have tried a huge portion of the menu, I think we could narrow down the next order and eat a bit more affordably, probably for around $40 plus tip for three of us. We were all impressed by the food, and the fact that they deliver is certainly a bonus.

Now, you may have noticed that the name of this place is the Bier Boutique, yet I did not write about beer at all so far. That is because even though I do like a good cider once in a while, I do not drink at work. If I did I could promise you that I would never get anything accomplished! With that said, they do have a pretty extensive beer menu with several interesting craft brews. So you can enjoy a delicious meal with a cold one. Sounds like a pretty perfect pairing to me!

Death by Tako | Review

Smoked Paprika Citrus Gulf Shrimp

Smoked Paprika Citrus Gulf Shrimp tacos

After a long bike ride all around Key West on Sunday my friend Pam was starving. “Let’s get a taco.” I am always up for food so we headed in to Death by Tako which is located at 1605 N Roosevelt. Blvd. and shares a space with Mellow Adventures.

There are a few tables inside along with a bar where you can get fresh juice or a craft beer. We sat down at a table and a waitress came over to ask if we wanted a drink. Yes! Ice water, and natural cherry cream soda. She asked if we would like some chips to start and we said okay, figuring she would bring over a basket of chips, but instead she dropped a small bag of Pita chips on our table. Pam and I just looked at each other and laughed but we were looking forward to our tacos.

Since each plate comes with two tacos, we decided to get two different options and share. We ordered the Old School key lime marinated mahi mahi with avocado, tomato, and sesame slaw as well as the smoked paprika citrus gulf shrimp with roasted poblano sweet corn and cilantro chimichurri. I loved being able to watch Chef Andrew Nguyen, formerly of Square One, prepare the tacos from our seats. When the food was brought over to us it looks and smelled divine.

I bit into the shrimp taco first and it was love at first bite. The shrimp were delicately cooked and melded perfectly with the fresh ingredients like the crispy corn that were part of the taco. This taco needed nothing in terms of extras to turn up the flavor.

The mahi mahi taco was overflowing with fish. The slaw was fresh and delicious and the fresh jalapeño pepper slices on the side were perfect for adding a bit of zing to the dish, which I then had to follow up with a bit of sour cream to lessen the heat.

If you are looking for some original tacos with the freshest ingredients, definitely give Death by Tako a try. They even deliver! And every other Saturday at 7pm the chef holds an underground social with a seasonal tasting menu and wine pairing. Reservations for this event are required. Death by Tako is currently open from 11am to 7pm Wednesday through Sunday.

Frenchie’s Cafe | Review

Frenchie's Cafe veggie quiche is amazingly tasty!

Frenchie’s Cafe veggie quiche is amazingly tasty!

One day a few months ago I was walking around downtown and I spied this little cafe on United Street. It was closed at the time, but I decided that I would try Frenchie’s Cafe one day soon. Well that day came this past weekend, and all I can say is that I wish I would have tried it sooner!

Frenchie’s Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You can eat at one of the six or so tables on site, you can get your food to go, or you can get it delivered! For such a small place, they offer a large menu of everything from french pastries to sandwiches and salads to quiches. And of course a bevy of coffee options.

I ordered a cafe au lait and the Idaho quiche which was made up of potatoes, onions, bacon, and cheese. However, the Idaho quiche was already gone so I went with the veggie quiche instead.

The coffee that Frenchie’s Cafe serves is good and much stronger than you will get at most places; appropriately enough it reminded me of what is served in Europe.

The veggie quiche was a surprise. I was not expecting anything mind blowing with a veggie quiche as I am a bacon lover and was slightly disappointed that the Idaho quiche was already gone. But this was probably a blessing in disguise as the veggie quiche was easily the best quiche I have ever tasted. It was like the most delicious ratatouille served in a light quiche form. And the accompanying salad was a nice pairing adding freshness to the warm dish.

I also ordered an almond croissant to go which I enjoyed for breakfast the next morning. Even though I did not eat it right away, the croissant was still flaky and light and the filling was  spread out evenly and it was delicious without being overly sweet.

So now that I am hungry and drooling from writing this review, I think I am going to head back to Frenchie’s Cafe and repeat my last order.
