Kim’s Kuban | Review

After a busy morning in the office, we were starving. Delivery to Stock Island is limited, and tired of the same old, we decided to try something different. Having never eaten at Kim’s Cuban, we gave them a call and placed out order.  Lila ordered the chicken soup and a cheese toast and I ordered a chicken burrito and a homemade rice pudding. It seemed like forever before they showed up with the food, but that was probably be because we were famished! Answering phones and emails is hard work!

Unpacking the meal, the chicken soup was a really nice sized portion and the burrito was enormous. But the rice pudding was missing. We gave them a call and about 15 minutes later they were back with another bag containing the rice pudding; more on that later!

Lila said that her chicken soup was very good, and liked the addition of cilantro to it. I personally love cilantro, so I am sure that I would have love that soup! And you cannot go wrong with Cuban bread with butter and cheese; this was delicious. Try adding jalapeños if you like spicy!!

My burrito tasted fine and was very filling. I only ate about a quarter of it, it was so large. But I was disappointed with this choice. It was basically a rice burrito with a very little bit of beans and chicken mixed in.

Now, for the rice pudding… I opened the bag and the homemade rice pudding was not homemade at all. I was kind of upset so I didn’t even end up eating it. Lila ate it two days later and she said that it tasted good but it had the consistency of clay and that it gave her a stomach ache. I guess I dodged a bullet there.

Homemade rice pudding???

Homemade rice pudding???

For the amount of food that you get for the price it is a pretty good deal for breakfast or lunch.

Thirsty Mermaid | Review

Thirsty Mermaid Key West Scallops

Thirsty Mermaid scallops.

Walking around downtown last month I noticed a small, new restaurant on Fleming Street called the Thirsty Mermaid. This weekend we finally found the time to check it out for dinner. Right off the bat we loved the relaxed atmosphere and the coastal decor, and we were excited to try out some different things on the menu.

We started with the clam chowder with Maine lobster, corn and bacon. This was rich and delicious with the different flavors complimenting each other. And bacon makes just about everything taste great!

The island wedge salad was very good. A simple salad made delicious with the bacon and the maytag blue cheese. Also loved the addition of tomatoes to this for some color and more varied flavor.

Thirsty Mermaid Key West Burger

One of the three different burger choices at the Thirsty Mermaid.

The grilled cheese sandwich with cheddar, Monterey jack, brie, bacon and tomato was out of this world. The mixture of cheeses made it creamy and added extra depth to this sandwich. And the accompanying fries were thin and crispy and tasty with just the right amount of salt.

The good ol’ boy burger was a really great hamburger, topped with cheddar, bacon, onion, and tomato. And this was also served with yummy fries. (Do you see a trend here? We really like our bacon!)

Okay, so moving away from the bacon…

The gnocchi and short ribs were billed on the menu as being spicy, but there is just a hint of hotness, so even those that cannot tolerate spice will likely be able to enjoy this dish. The short rib meat was tender and combined nicely with the delicate gnocchi.

The diver scallops were prepared perfectly. They were served with a corn relish and fingerling potatoes. The combination of the tastes was nice, but I would have liked for there to be a few more potatoes on the dish so that each bite of scallops could have been accompanied with both the relish and the potato flavor.

Thirsty Mermaid also has a nice wine and bar selection to choose from. For the four of us the bill came to a bit more than $150 with tip, so not outrageous. And the service was good as well. The is certainly a spot that we would dine at again.

Croissants de France Bakery & Pastries – Stock Island

The interior on Croissant de France on Stock Island.

The interior on Croissant de France on Stock Island.

Croissants de France has opened a second location on Stock Island. On one had, this is amazing because I work on Stock Island and when I want a croissant I am only three minutes away. On the other hand, I am just three minutes away from a croissant six days a week. If my willpower is down that is going to create some havoc for me! But all in all I am thrilled to have this second location so nearby.

Unlike the main Croissants de France on Duval Street, this one does not have a full restaurant attached, so no eggs Benedict, pancakes, or salads are served here. However, they do have a nice selection of breads, quiches, pastries, cakes, and sandwiches. And of course several coffee drinks are also made to order.

You can enjoy a coffee and a croissant on Stock Island at Croissant de France in their adorable courtyard.

Sadly, once I found out that the new location opened I visited three days in a row. On the first day I got a piece of the spinach and feta quiche to go. It was amazing; creamy and flakey all at once. On the second day, I got a spinach and feta croissant and an almond croissant. They were super fresh and delicious. On the third day I got a tuna sandwich. The tuna salad was tasty and wonderfully paired on a butter croissant. I also brought a tuna sandwich back to my husband and he complained that it was too small, but for me it was the perfect size.

Anyway, I am putting the brakes on my visits here for at least a few days! But I am looking forward to trying a Napoleon or a slice of key lime pie on my next visit!

Croissants de France’s Stock Island location can be found at 5620 McDonald Ave. (This is the same building that you can also find Roostica and the Dolphin Deli.) Their hours are 6:30am to 6:00pm, seven days a week.

Frenchie’s Cafe | Review

Frenchie's Cafe veggie quiche is amazingly tasty!

Frenchie’s Cafe veggie quiche is amazingly tasty!

One day a few months ago I was walking around downtown and I spied this little cafe on United Street. It was closed at the time, but I decided that I would try Frenchie’s Cafe one day soon. Well that day came this past weekend, and all I can say is that I wish I would have tried it sooner!

Frenchie’s Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You can eat at one of the six or so tables on site, you can get your food to go, or you can get it delivered! For such a small place, they offer a large menu of everything from french pastries to sandwiches and salads to quiches. And of course a bevy of coffee options.

I ordered a cafe au lait and the Idaho quiche which was made up of potatoes, onions, bacon, and cheese. However, the Idaho quiche was already gone so I went with the veggie quiche instead.

The coffee that Frenchie’s Cafe serves is good and much stronger than you will get at most places; appropriately enough it reminded me of what is served in Europe.

The veggie quiche was a surprise. I was not expecting anything mind blowing with a veggie quiche as I am a bacon lover and was slightly disappointed that the Idaho quiche was already gone. But this was probably a blessing in disguise as the veggie quiche was easily the best quiche I have ever tasted. It was like the most delicious ratatouille served in a light quiche form. And the accompanying salad was a nice pairing adding freshness to the warm dish.

I also ordered an almond croissant to go which I enjoyed for breakfast the next morning. Even though I did not eat it right away, the croissant was still flaky and light and the filling was  spread out evenly and it was delicious without being overly sweet.

So now that I am hungry and drooling from writing this review, I think I am going to head back to Frenchie’s Cafe and repeat my last order.
