2013 Southernmost Air Spectacular

Ever since I was a child I loved airplanes and air shows. It sounds funny to most people that I tell this too, but probably my favorite thing about living in the Key West area is being by Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West, which is the Navy’s premier air to air combat training station. So nearly everyday while I am driving in to work I get to see an air show of sorts with these amazing pilots practicing and training their flight maneuvers. It is like Top Gun brought to life here in the Keys.

So I am very excited about the Southernmost Air Spectacular that is being held this weekend at Boca Chica Field in Key West. Especially since this may very well be the last time in the foreseeable future that we get to see these types of performances again with all of the budget cuts being made to the US military. And having the Blue Angels, who will be performing at the show, here early practicing before hand for the last day or so has been pretty awesome too.

The show is free, with gates opening at 9am on the 23rd and 24th of March, 2013. A tentative schedule of events is posted below. But besides a mix of civilian and military performers, there will be many more things so check out during the show. There will be a display of aircraft for aviation fans and history buffs. A Kids Zone will be set up for the little ones. And organizations of the local community will have displays for everything from information to concessions to air show memorabilia. Plus, the Budweiser Clydesdales are making a special appearance too; now who does not want to see these beautiful horses.

Attendees are encouraged to bring hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen as well as blankets and folding chairs to sit on unless they purchased VIP seating ahead of time. But there are also things that you should not bring with you including coolers, food, backpacks and large bags. If you do bring items such as diaper bags, camera bags, and purses, they will be subjected to search. And while Fido may enjoy the outdoors, he is prohibited unless he is a service dog.
