I love trying out new restaurants, especially ones that are close to my work. When Matt’s Stock Island Grill opened up at the new Perry Hotel on Stock Island, I was excited. Matt’s tagline is to let the ingredients speak for themselves. The cuisine is considered “American Coastal Comfort Food.” And they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My husband and I decided to try it out with some friends not too long ago for dinner.
First off, the hotel is amazing. Very modern and sleek yet warm feeling. And there are several events that are held throughout the year at the hotel and adjacent marina. So check out our events calendar to see if something exciting is happening while you are visiting Key West!
We started off with smoked fish dip and Oysters Rockefeller. While the dip was not bad, it was unimpressive. We all thought it was a bit bland with too much lemon added to it. Matt’s had a different take on the oysters; they were made with kale instead of spinach. Good call! Katie and I both loved these.
My husband, Steven, ordered the little gem wedge salad. It was dressed with buttermilk dressing, pork belly, red onion, heirloom tomatoes, and blue cheese. It’s presentation was beautiful, but it was not the wedge salad he was expecting. Nonetheless, it was tasty.
Katie and I shared some smaller plates because there were so many things we wanted to try. The roasted Brussel sprouts with citrus and bacon were one of those items. They were tasty, but we didn’t really taste the bacon which was disappointing. The citrus, however, could not be missed.
We also got the yucca fries with pickapepper aioli and Manchego. For those of you that do not know what yucca is, it is a root vegetable similar to a potato in taste and texture. These I absolutely loved. The mixture of cheese and yucca was perfect.
Cameron got the basket of fried chicken with a side of bacon salt fries. The chicken was decent according to Cameron. But the fries were disappointing. We all thought that they would be more bacon flavored, but that just was not the case; they were basically just fries.
Steven got the baby back ribs. He was pretty disappointed with them. But I always say that when you go out to eat you should really get something that they specialize in, and Matt’s obviously specializes in seafood.
We all decided that the food was okay at best. All of the food was overwhelmed with citrus. A little is not bad, but we just thought it was a bit overkill. And at almost $300, dinner was extremely expensive for what we got in my opinion. Katie and I each got a glass of wine, but the guys drank only water. I would not come back for dinner, but I would not be opposed to trying it for breakfast one day.
