Where the Locals Go

So, this is a question that I get often, tourists looking for the places that locals like to frequent. And I am always a little nervous to give out the information since these places will then cease to be locals places any longer. But truly, nothing is strictly locals anymore. So, here we are!

Harpoon Harrys

Chico’s Cantina on Stock Island has been my favorite go to place to get lunch or dinner since I moved here over twenty years ago. It is super low key with delicious food and an entertaining staff.

Hogfish Bar & Grill is located at the old Shrimp docks on Stock Island. Restauranteur Bobby Mongelli who cut his teeth operating PT’s which was the locals place back 25 years ago, has turned this location into a true locals spot that serves fresh seafood straight from the boats.

Roostica, also on Stock Island is Bobby Mongelli’s other restaurant specializing in wood fired pizza and other delicious Italian dishes. Another favorite for me for lunch or dinner.

El Siboney on Key West is another place that is a locals favorite for Cuban cuisine. Prices are really reasonable and servings are heaping. Service can be a bit wanting, but it is worth it for the amazing food.

Origami in Duval Square is THE place that locals go to for sushi. It is very low key and there is parking which is a big plus in my book!

Harpoon Harry’s Restaurant and Bar is a true locals spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but breakfast here is the bomb! Plus, you can enjoy a mean Bloody Marry or Bloody Harry (spicy bloody Mary) or a cafe con leche (Cuban coffee).

Virgilio’s Martini Bar at La Trattoria on Duval Street is a locals favorite for a lounge atmosphere with drink specials, outdoor dancing, and live music too!

Green Parrot Bar on Whitehead Street has been a real Key West institution since 1890! Live music on the weekends always bring in the crowds. The range of “salty” local characters that hang out here is vast.

The Smokin’ Tuna Saloon has not been around quite as long at some of the other places mentioned above, but it is another venue packed with locals, especially when Caffein Carl is playing his music here.

The Afterdeck Bar at Louie’s Backyard offers handcrafted cocktails and fine wines that can be enjoyed while gazing at the Atlantic. The views here are amazing. And if you want to get a bit to eat, so is the food!

There are so many other places that locals go to hang out in addition to these spots mentioned, but theses are some that are what I would call less touristy and more Old Florida in feel.

There are many places to eat on this island. Before you decide where to go, be sure to read my Key West restaurant reviews; check out our restaurant review section of this blog.
