Key West is Losing a Piece of History: Fast Buck Freddy’s Closes

Anyone who has ever been to Key West in the last 35 years and walked along Duval Street has no doubt seen the famous window displays at Fast Buck Freddy’s, our only island department store. The store is full of interesting things like Tommy Bahama clothes, tropical housewares and kitchen goods, stationary, candles, furniture, light fixtures, and many more interesting items.

Unfortunately, at the end of the month Fast Buck’s will be no more. Owner Tony Falcone says that one of the reasons for the store’s closure is online shopping. People can scan a barcode and find the product cheaper online.

Some locals are happy for the closure because the store never offered local’s discounts and they reportedly did not donate monies to local events and charities. But most locals are saddened by the closing. Not only was it a landmark and a neat place to pass some time, but fifty employees will be losing their jobs.

I for one hope that the space is not taken over by another $5.00 t-shirt shop! I cannot take another of those stores with workers screaming at you to come in and buy some of the crap they are peddling.
