Key West is a subtropical island. It is the closest point to the equator in the continental USA. That makes our weather here nearly perfect everyday!
In the summertime one can expect temperatures in the 90’s F; however, the humidity is high so it feels much warmer on most days. In the winter months the temperature is generally in the 60’s to 70’s F, but it can get down into the 40’s F and up into the 80’s F.
Key West does have a rainy season. Generally, it is dry December through April and rainy May through October. However, the rain showers experienced in Key West are typically scattered and short lived, providing a nice respite from the summertime heat.
June 1st through November 30th is hurricane season. The fall months are most active for storms. If a storm is on its way it is not unusual for there to be mandatory evacuations for all visitors with flight and cruise ship cancellations.
If no storms are around, you can expect calm winds during the summer and fall months while the winds pick up during the winter and spring times. It is not unusual for us to experience 0 to 15 mph winds in the summer and fall and 15 to 30 mph winds in the winter and spring. That means that seas are generally calmer in the summer and fall than they are in the winter and spring.
Winter and spring is the busy season in Key West. You can expect minimum night stays and higher rates at the hotels during this time than you traditionally will during summer and fall. Reason being that more people want to be here with the more temperate winter climate when they are experiencing cold weather back home. But, the off season is becoming increasingly busier with several events happening during these months such as Lobsterfest, Fantasy Fest, and Hemingway Days. Plus, the more affordable hotel rates draw in many people, especially families that come down on summer break.
