Summer is just a bit more than a month away. When thinking about your summer travel plans, you should seriously consider visiting Key West. While most people think of planning a Key West vacation for the winter season, summer on the island is a hidden gem. If you’re looking for sunny skies, laid-back vibes, and unbeatable experiences without the winter crowds, here’s why Key West should be at the top of your summer travel list.

1. Warm Waters, Epic Adventures
The water is at its warmest in summer, making it the perfect time for a day at the beach, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, or just floating in the turquoise shallows on a sandbar excursion. With fewer boats on the water compared to peak season, it’s easier to find your own slice of paradise. Don’t miss snorkeling the coral reefs or exploring a sandbar or two.
2. Hot Fishing Action
Summer is prime time for offshore and flats fishing. Grouper season is open, and snappers abound on the reef and offshore wrecks. Mahi-mahi aka dolphin or dorado are the hot ticket fishing offshore during the summer months. And, there is always a chance for a marlin stop strike while fishing in the blue water this time of year! But, if deep sea is not your thing, tarpon, bonefish, and permit rule the flats in the summer months. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just looking for a fun day on the water, the summer bite is hard to beat.
3. Slower Pace, Better Deals
With the winter crowds gone, summer in Key West is more relaxed. Hotel rates are lower, restaurants are easier to get into, and excursions tend to have more availability. You’ll feel like you have the island all to yourself—without the premium prices. Yes, some business take vacation during this time, but that number is minimal and there will still be a ton of places to enjoy.
4. Unique Local Events
Key West keeps the party going all summer long. The island is home to many quirky festivals. My favorite is the annual Hemingway Days in July. This is a week-long celebration of the island’s most famous literary resident. The island’s festive energy, live music, and colorful characters make every night feel like an event in itself.
