Lolita’s Coastal Cocina

Mexican restaurant Key West Lolitas

Recently opened at the Opal Key West Resort & Marina, Lolita’s Coastal Cocina menu is filled with Mexican fare and handcrafted cocktails. And, a full tequila and mezcal menu also makes this a wonderful place to just grab a cocktail and watch the sun set over Mallory Square.

My husband and I decided to try out this New Mexican restaurant with a couple of friends the other evening. Being located at a resort meant that we could park in the parking garage, although the restaurant does not validate so parking is not free. But, having a place to park is a convenience in downtown Key West.

When we arrived, we were not sure if they were open as the outside area is still being put together. However, it was open indeed, and the inside is absolutely gorgeous. It has an upscale yet relaxed vibe with beautiful details from floor to ceiling.

Lolitas Key West guacamole, chips and margarita

The Food

With a full bar and an interesting cocktail menu, we all ordered drinks to start. I went with the classic margarita because I feel that it is important to be able to do the common things well. My husband went with the strawberry margarita, Dianne with the prickly pear mojito and Erik with the watermelon jalapeño margarita. We were all very happy with our choices. They were the perfect balance without being too strong or too sweet.

To start, we ordered guacamole and chips, salsa, and chile con queso for the table. All were beautifully presented. The guacamole was fresh and delicious. The chile con queso was so creamy and delicious that we all commented on it and practically licked the bowl clean. The salsas were probably more traditional Mexican than what we are used to getting at American Mexican restaurants. There were a trio of types which we all tried but were not particularly fond of.

For my entree, I went with the enchilada suizas. These decadent enchiladas, a combination of lightly fried corn tortillas filled with tasty, tender shredded chicken and covered in a creamy salsa verde and melted cheese were so delicious that even though I was full I cleaned my plate.

My husband went with the chicken quesadilla which is what I was planning on ordering until he said that was what he wanted. He really enjoyed the tender shredded chicken grilled inside of a flour tortillas with yummy cheese and salsa verde.

Dianne went with the Lolita Bowl, which was a huge portion. It was loaded with cilantro flavored rice, arugula, romaine, chicken, charred corn, poblano peppers, grilled red onions, tomatoes, avocado, and topped with cheese, Reposado lime vinaigrette, and crispy tortilla strips. The fare was fresh and melded together perfectly for a delicious meal.

Erik went with the street tacos al pastor. While they didn’t look particularly appealing to me with the pink colored pork from the chili marinade and sparse plate coverage, he did enjoy them. The pickled red onions, cilantro, and grilled pineapple salsa gave the dish a freshness with a touch of sweet.

The Experience

As I said earlier, the place was absolutely gorgeous inside. You can get views at the harbor too which is nice. When the outdoor seating is completed, I think it will be a very popular spot for dining before taking part in the nightly sunset celebration.

Our waiter, Furkan, was very good. He was informative about the menu items and answered any questions that we had. He was also attentive without being overbearing.

Before sunset, the bar was packed, but as the sun sank down, the crowds inside lessened and people carried their drinks outside to the water to watch for a green flash.

Also, this meal was relatively affordable at less than $200 for 4 of us. We were pleasantly surprised by this. We will definitely be back for dinner. Lolita’s also serves breakfast and lunch. If you are a fan of Mexican cuisine or tequila, this is a place you have got to try when in Key West.
