Bistro Sole's calamari
Bistro Sole’s calamari

John and Judy Correa recently opened Bistro Sole, located at 1019 White Street. They refer to this new French eatery as the little sister to their famed restaurant, Cafe Sole. The outdoor seating area is very welcoming and comfortable for people and their pets should they want to bring Fido along.

While many restaurants start you off with bread, Bistro Sole does not, but they will bring you a delicious baguette with herbed butter for a mere $1.00 which I thought was fair.

We were told about the species which included a house rose and a house white wine. I tried the rose and Lisa tried the white, and we were both happy with our choice. We also ordered the calamari and the escargot to start. I did not try the later, but the calamari was tender yet crispy and very flavorful. A win to start!

For dinner both Steven and Chris orders the linguine vongole (with clams). Lisa orders the fish special. And I ordered the vegetarian platter.

I have to say that I was wondering if I was going to regret going with the vegetarian option as that can be a boring choice at some restaurants, but I was not disappointed in the least. I was actually very happy with my choice. The dish was a variety: curried lentils, tomato provencal, polenta, asparagus, ratatouille, Brussels sprouts, and house chutney & papadum. Everything was so flavorful, and I was full after eating too.

Lisa’s fish special was served with brussel sprouts, asparagus, and a tomato provencal. The presentation was lovely, but the true test was the taste. It is wonderful when one does not overcook or over-season the fish, and this was just perfect.

The linguine was great. A simple dish that was light and tasty, seasoned with white wine and garlic.

We did not order dessert, but our server Cynthia brought us a serving of the dark chocolate Belgian mousse topped off with cherries and whipped cream for the table to share. I did enjoy the mousse, but I would have preferred it without the cherries.

The service was wonderful. We were never lacking for anything. The setting was lovely. The food was delicious. All in all a perfect evening. We will definitely be dining here again, next time with Indiana Bones!
