Breakfast at Havana Key West on Duval Street.
Breakfast at Havana Key West on Duval Street.

This weekend I met up with my friend Pam for lunch. We decided to try Havana on Duval Street since neither one of us had eaten there before. The space is small and loud as you walk in, and it has the feel of a diner except it also has a full bar with a really cool drink menu. Havana served breakfast and lunch daily and they also offer pick up if you don’t want to dine on site.

We were seated immediately at a table that had just been vacated and cleaned up and the server was fast to take our drink orders (water and cafe con leche for us both). The cafe was delicious.

I opted to go with breakfast even though it was noon; The Havana Special consists of two eggs cooked to your specifications, bacon or ham, and french toast made with Cuban bread. Not only was the presentation of my dish nice, it tasted phenomenal. And, they had real maple syrup which ultimately hoped me make my decision as I refuse to eat the other stuff. On a side note, the waiter did not know that there was a difference between real maple syrup and regular pancake syrup. He brought both out but apparently he thought they were the same thing. I think that this is something a server should know if they are offering both options.

Pam went with the chicken with white rice, black beans, and plantains. They must have marinated that chicken for days because it was extremely tender and the seasoning could be tasted all of the way through the meat at every bite. Awesome job!

They had some great looking desserts too but we were too full to try any of them out. While our server seemed a little frazzled, he was pleasant enough and was quick with bringing us our food. I will certainly eat here again next time I am in the area.
