Today is November 30, 2024, and it is the last day of the Atlantic Hurricane Season! The season runs each year from June 1 until November 30. To mark this day, Key West celebrates by burning a hurricane flag doused in rum. Can there be a more appropriate way for this island to mark the occasion?
Peak Hurricane Activity
Typically, peak hurricane activity is mid-August to mid-September. However, this year was an anomaly with the unusual patterns experienced. On July 2, Hurricane Beryl became the Atlantic’s easiest category five hurricane. This storm affected parts of the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean. After that, we had a really quiet season. Until…
Helene formed on September 24. And, while people in parts of Florida, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee were still cleaning up from this storm, Milton formed soon after. In total, there were eighteen named tropical storms this year. Out of these, eleven became hurricanes, and five became major hurricanes. Luckily, the Florida Keys and Key West remained just out of reach of these storms this year. Yay!
When Should I Visit Key West?
Now, the question is, “when should I visit Key West?” Well, whenever you want to. Every time of year has its pros and cons. But, anytime of year one can have a great time in Key West. With so much to experience both on land and on the water, the island is a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetimes, if not on the regular!
Visiting during hurricane season can be awesome! Hotel rates are much more affordable during this time, with the exception of during certain festivals. And speaking of festivals, there are many during this time. The Key Lime Festival, Hemingway Days, Lobsterfest, and FantasyFest are some of the more popular ones, and they are definitely a lot of fun to attend. And, if a storm should head this way, the hurricane parties can be an insanely good time. However, if a big bad one does come along, evacuating will be required for tourists.
During our peak season, hotel rates are much higher. But, you won’t have to contend with hurricanes or possible evacuations due to them. And, it is always great to escape the icy cold tundras of the north to our comfortable subtropical climate that we experience here year round.
