My friend Abi and I decided to grab a coffee and a bite to eat before our pedicures the other day. We decided to try Jose’s Latin Food. Neither one of us had been there before and it was in the same plaza we were heading to. The inside is nice and clean and the bright wall paintings give the place some ambiance. We went up to the front to look at the menu and order. Unfortunately, we were off to a bad start when we asked for a cafe con leche and they said no. But, we were pretty sure that they made one for someone else just a few minutes after we sat down. Anyway, that was our hint that we should have left, but we decided to try it anyway.
The Food
I ordered the Nica Tacos which came with a salad, basically a vinegary cole slaw. They also brought me ketchup which I thought was completely strange. And there was a side of something I thought was sour cream or mayo but it didn’t taste like either. The beef resembled rope vieja, but it was the most tasteless meat I have ever eaten. And the taco shell was a somewhat thick corn tortilla that had more of a pancake consistency. I thought it should have been at least a little crispy after being fried, but it was mushy. There were three tacos, so it was a good amount of food, but I ate only one as it was just so unappealing and lacking of flavor.
The only thing that made my food somewhat palatable was that Abi ordered a burrito which came with actual sour cream and guacamole. She didn’t want either, so I used them to give my tacos some flavor. As for her chicken burrito, it was filled mostly with rice and was otherwise unremarkable. Suffice it to say, neither of us were impressed with our food.
When we ordered we told the girl that we were going to eat there. However, she brought our food to us all wrapped up in to go bags. Other people eating there were served their food on an actual plate. There were a lot of negatives about this dining experience and really no positives. After eating here, we decided that we were glad that we tried it but we never need to revisit this place. There are too many other places with tasty food and better service available on the island.
