Key West Brunch Series – Firefly

Brunch menu at the Firefly and their signature blood orange mimosa.

Casual and delicious are two words to describe the brunch at Firefly. Located on Petronia Street, the location is great for walking around downtown Key West and enjoying the architecture on a beautiful day. Firefly is located inside an old conch house that has been transformed into a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. It was such a beautiful morning we decided to sit on the upstairs balcony.  After being seated, our server greeted us with a smile and some waters. With so many amazing menu options, we looked to our server for some guidance; she was so helpful and steared us in the right direction (not that you could order anything bad on the menu, we’re convinced). She let us know most everything is made in house, from the tomato soup that pairs with the grilled cheese, to the mixed berry cobbler for dessert. We decided to get the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich; and I couldn’t resist ordering the Shrimp and Grits.

Our starter came out first which was grilled cheese bites with a side of tomato soup. The soup was thick with plenty of flavor, and I couldn’t get enough of it on my grilled cheese. My only suggestion would be to ask for a spoon or more grilled cheese pieces.

Next was the shrimp and grits with andouille sausage. I’ve never been a huge grits person but these grits were cooked perfectly. The sausage and shrimp had some spice which was a perfect pairing with the savory flavor of the grits. If I could eat here every day I would become a grits person.

Have you ever had fried green tomatoes? Did you love them? Do you not like tomatoes? Well throw everything you know about tomatoes out the window cause the Fried Green Tomatoes Sandwich at Firefly is likely going to change your opinion. Before brunch at Firefly I only ate tomatoes in pizza sauce form. But fried green tomatoes topped with baby kale and a red pepper relish were simply amazing!. My boyfriend still isn’t over this sandwich and requested I drive into Key West to pick him up one for lunch today (we live in Cudjoe). The sweetness of the fried tomatoes was paired perfectly by a flavorful spice from the red pepper relish. As a side for the sandwich they served a marinated cucumber salad which was light and delicious. I highly recommend this sandwich to anyone looking for a filling yet light lunch.

We ended our brunch with a delicious homemade mixed berry cobbler with vanilla ice cream on top. What is not to like here!

It was a lovely experience and I would recommend this restaurant  to anyone interested in exploring the architecture in downtown Key West and stopping for a great bite to eat. There is limited parking around this restaurant so I recommend biking or walking. Brunch is served everyday from 10AM to 3PM.
