Key West’s Duval Street

For anyone that has ever visited Key West, you are sure to have walked along Duval Street. This street is basically the main road in Old Town Key West. Interestingly, at fifteen blocks long, this street touches both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Duval Street is almost always teeming with people enjoying the views along with the many art galleries, bars, restaurants, museums, and shops that dot this famed street.

The island’s Cuban influence can be clearly seen on Duval Street. Much of the art that decorates the shops is Cuban themed. And you can purchase Cuban coffee and cigars at many of the stores and restaurants here.

Eighteen buildings on Duval Street are designated historic and much of the street is actually a part of the National Register of Historic Places. This means that any building renovations in this area must meet stringent guidelines. So, Duval Street will always have that historic charm.

But aside from the history, the party atmosphere prevails, especially during the many festivals that are held in the Duval Street area, with October’s annual Fantasy Fest being the most famous. And, of course, bars such as Sloppy Joe’s, Margaritaville, Rick’s, Irish Kevin’s, Bourbon Street Pub, and Fat Tuesdays only add to the party vibe.

Art, architecture and history mixed in with over 100 bars that line the diverse Duval Street give the street equal parts culture and debauchery. But all of these things are what makes the street so special.

Personally, I love walking around Duval Street early in the morning while it is still cool and quiet. And it is also the perfect time to get one of those delicious Cuban coffees to enjoy!
