The Moose Pit – Review

The Moose Pit, located on Pearl Street in the back of the Key West Moose Lodge that faces Eisenhower Drive, opened back in March of this year. While the front of the building is only open to Moose Lodge members, The Moose Pit is open to the public and offers a few tables for outside dining or you can call ahead for pick up. This pit beef stand serves up Maryland style BBQ Monday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Sunday for Brunch from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Today was a nice, windy day, so my husband and I decided to finally give the BBQ here a try as we are sorely lacking good BBQ here in Key West. For a small place, the menu was much more extensive than I had anticipated. They serve pit beef, pit ham and pit turkey sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, ribs, smash burgers, wings, and other munchies as well. Today, we went with an order of ribs and wings served with onion rings and an Austin pit beef sandwich with fries.

The guy working the stand was very friendly and made recommendations. Once we placed our order, we sat down with some waters and relaxed until the food was brought out. Located on a quiet little lane in downtown Key West, I could picture eating here a lot if I lived downtown. I mean, the first thing I noticed when we pulled up was how good it smelled. Once our food was brought out, I took a few pictures before digging in.

My sandwich had thinly sliced pit beef piled high on a hard roll along with melted cheddar cheese, bbq sauce, and jalapeños. It was sooo good. All of the flavors melded wonderfully together on this sandwich that definitely needed two hands to eat. Many times I am hesitant about just biting right into a sandwich like this because I don’t want to get a mouth full of fat which completely grosses me out, but this was all good, lean, tender, delicious meat. The fries were pretty good and plentiful, and the baked bean were really tasty with hints of pork in them.

The ribs my husband ordered were really tasty and tender. The wings were good as well. The onion rings were decent.

The Moose Pit is by far my favorite BBQ place in Key West. On a cool and breezy day, eating at the picnic tables would be nice, but take out is easy.

There are tons of places to eat on this island. Before you decide where to go, be sure to read my Key West restaurant reviews; check out our restaurant review section of this blog.
