El Rinconcito Mexican Restaurant Review

I was very excited to hear of a New Mexican restaurant opening in Key West. Today, my husband and I tried it out for lunch. Located at the Overseas Market, aka the Winn Dixie Shopping Center Plaza, this tiny eatery offers on site dining as well as delivery. With about seven tables in the tiny space, it might be easier to order take out or delivery. Also, the music playing was quite loud. Although it made it difficult to talk to one another, it definitely added to the Mexican restaurant atmosphere. This was formerly a pizza place and it still bares that feeling, thanks in part to the red pepper and oregano shakers on the tables.

The Food

I have to say that we were greeted quickly and the staff was friendly. We started off with waters and chips and guacamole for the table which was brought out fairly quickly. While it was enjoyable, the guac was a little too citrusy for my taste. For our meals I went with the chicken enchiladas and my husband went with the chicken quesadilla.

My husband enjoyed his quesadilla saying that it was “really tasty.” I snuck a bite and it was delicious. I loved the sautéed onions which really adds nice flavor. The enchiladas were good as well, although very different from my expectations; my husband on the other hand did not enjoy them at all. The enchiladas were garnished with chopped lettuce, tomatoes and cheese and served with rice and beans. I would have preferred if there was no cheese on it as the tanginess of it really didn’t meld well with the sauce in my opinion. I also would have liked more enchilada sauce on them as they were barely wet.

While we waited for the check we used the restroom which was spotless! They get big points here. The bill came to $41.36 plus tip. I thought it was a bit much for the atmosphere and what we got. Also, not sure what the .99¢ “1 small fee” on my bill was for, but I was not going to quibble over a dollar.

More About Key West

If you are in the New Town area and have a craving for Mexican food, this might be worth a stop. However, El Siboney on Stock Island offers much bigger portions of delicious Cuban food in a much roomier atmosphere for the same to less money. Check out my review on El Siboney Stock Island HERE!
