La Grignote Bistro is a small artisan French bakery and café located at 1211 Duval Street in Key West. Everything that they make is from scratch. They have a huge array of goods from pastries such as cookies, danish, muffins, and croissants to breads of all types.
At their cafe, you can choose from sweet or savory options. From waffles and egg dishes for breakfast to pizzas, salads and sandwiches for lunch, there are no shortage of delicious options.
Our office decided to have a lunch meeting at La Grignote one Friday. It was a challenge to get hte boss to agree to go downtown during the day, but we found parking on the street easily enough and it was a very nice day weather-wise, so we sat at teh counter outside to enjoy our meal.
There are so many choices, that it was hard to make a decision on what to order at the counter. I went with the veggie sandwich on a croissant, the boss man went with a tuna melt, and Lila went with the Mediterranean panini.
The veggie sandwich had sliced tomatoes, pea sprouts, sliced carrots, avocado, and Veganaise (of which I was a bit wary about). Normally it is served on homemade sourdough, but as noted above, I requested it to be on a croissant because I am a sucker for those flaky, buttery, heavenly pastries. I have say that this was by far the best veggie sandwich that I have ever eaten, and in my top ten of most delicious sandwiches ever. All of the veggies were fresh and crisp and just worked perfectly together. My mouth is actually starting to water just thinking about it!
The tuna melt was delicious; lemon and tarragon made this tuna salad distinct. It was served on sourdough bread with sliced tomatoes and topped with melted cheddar cheese.
The Mediterranean panini was filled with a homemade tapenade, goat cheese, sliced tomato, and Herbes de Provence on a rustic homemade country bread. Wow!
For dessert we ordered a chocolate muffin which was yummy as well as a cappuccino and a French hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was very strong and not as sweet as we Americans are used to, but very delicious.
All this, plus bottled waters ran us $70. Not too bad for lunch in Key West. This is a definite must stop for breakfast or lunch while visiting the island! And they also serve beer and wine!
La Grignote’s hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 7AM – 5PM, Sunday from 7AM – 4PM, and closed on Mondays.
