Lots of weather last weekend really shook it up here in Key West but that did not stop the world sailfish championship from being underway. With perfect conditions earlier in the week these boats landed over 600 sailfish in three days of fishing. The winner was the crew on board the “Sandman” . Nice work guys. Speaking of tournaments, we always have a tournament happening here in Key West. The Key West Fishing Tournament sponsored by Dream Catcher Charters. A year round event that allows anyone and everyone to participate. No entry fee required and lots of fun. If you are visiting, go out fishing either on your own or on a Key West fishing charter, catch a nice fish or any fish. Make it a recorded catch.. Who knows you may win something at our awards banquet held in November..
Inshore things are still hot with the tarpon bite and the migration has begun. Tarpon are poring in from the south into the inlets and channels along the flats offering our visiting Key West fishing anglers a shot at landing the silver king. Check out the Florida Keys Tarpon Fishing Guide web site to learn more about tarpon fishing.

Located at 915 Duval Street, this is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Key West. It is located on the quieter end of Duval Street, so area crowds and parking are not typically an issue here. Although, because the food and the wine selection are so amazing you do need to make reservations to eat here or you will probably be waiting a long time for a table. Nine One Five has both indoor and outdoor seating. In the summers I opt for inside seating to keep cool but in the winter sitting outside is very comfortable and great for people watching.
The Hogfish Bar and Grill is hidden away in Safe Harbor on the Stock Island section of Key West. This is Key West old style! It is a locals hangout, but many a lucky tourist hear about this gem and make their way over to experience Key West the way it used to be. You can hang out at the bar, play some pool, listen to live entertainment in the evenings, or relax with a drink and some grub at a table overlooking the water.
April 15th marks the start of turtle nesting season here in the Florida Keys, and it runs all the way through October 31st.While these little hatchlings are quite cute and an amazing sight to see, they are quite delicate and do not have a huge survival rate. There are already so many natural obstacles that they have to contend with such as predators or becoming tangled up in seaweed. So the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation is asking for our help to eliminate some of the man made threats that we have created for these little guys.
My first review of Kaya’s was written shortly after the restaurant opened, and owner Scott Taylor told me at the time that he had a few things to improve on still. Well, I can say that he has definitely done that! Kaya is now my favorite restaurant in the area. The decor is airy and islandy and fun, and the addition of some noise absorbing panels along with the dismissal of the live entertainment has vastly improved upon the dining experience here. Unfortunately the building acoustics are not very good in the building, but Scott has still been able to ensure a pleasant atmosphere for diners here. And the water front view is not bad either.
The iconic boat from the Humphrey Bogart movie of the same name, African Queen, has called the docks at the Holiday Inn in Key Largo home since 1983. The boat is actually registered as a national historic site. Recently, she has undergone major restorations to make her seaworthy again. And earlier this month, Humphrey Bogart’s son Stephen was in Key Largo for the African Queen’s relaunch party. Starting later on this month, there are plans to offer a two-hour canal cruise aboard the vessel as well as small private dinner cruises.
It was a sad day for the Florida Keys and Key West fishing community yesterday. News spread quickly that local TV celebrity and host of the Spanish Fly died in a plane crash. Shocked friends and fans texted each other and posted RIP on Jose’s Facebook page yesterday.
The Cuban born Jose was a natural at fishing, building his career and his reputation first as a guide and later as a TV personality; but his new love in recent years was flying. He was alone on his single engine plane when it crashed in Everglades City just after take off around 4:30 pm yesterday.
“Nobody has done more for fishing in the Keys than Jose,” said Dream Catcher Charters owner Capt Steven Lamp, “you will be missed.”

As my readers can probably tell, I am a little bit of a foodie. And I also love my coffee. I guess that is part of growing up in an Italian household. I do not drink it everyday, but when I really feel like having a cup and I don’t feel like making it myself there are a few select places that make a great cup like at Kaya Island Eats, Croissants de France, or Goldman’s Deli. I am not one of those people that can drink it black. I like mine light, no sugar. I love American coffee with milk or cream, cappuccinos made with fat free milk and I loved the Cuban cafe con leche.
Higg’s Beach is one of the larger beaches on the island of Key West. It has public restrooms as well as grills for cookouts, chair and umbrella rentals, volleyball courts, a pier, and the fabulous restaurant and bar, Salute. Oh, and I forgot to mention lots of parking! These features make Higg’s Beach a favorite hangout for the locals as well as the spring break crowd.
There is no doubt that Key West is a great place to visit. But with each passing year the island becomes a bit more commercial. It has to when it is a major Florida tourist destination. Key West has to be able to compete with Orlando, Miami, and other areas that draw lots of tourists with modern amenities and many activities. We have to change with the times. Otherwise, the island would fall into the tourist doldrums and end up a dead zone like Silver Springs, once a tourist mecca, has become. But that does not mean that with a very short cab ride or drive away you that you cannot still get that old Key West feel. Just cross Cow Key Channel Bridge onto Stock Island and you will find a taste of the way Key West once was.
