Lots of weather last weekend really shook it up here in Key West but that did not stop the world sailfish championship from being underway. With perfect conditions earlier in the week these boats landed over 600 sailfish in three days of fishing. The winner was the crew on board the “Sandman” . Nice work guys. Speaking of tournaments, we always have a tournament happening here in Key West. The Key West Fishing Tournament sponsored by Dream Catcher Charters. A year round event that allows anyone and everyone to participate. No entry fee required and lots of fun. If you are visiting, go out fishing either on your own or on a Key West fishing charter, catch a nice fish or any fish. Make it a recorded catch.. Who knows you may win something at our awards banquet held in November..
Inshore things are still hot with the tarpon bite and the migration has begun. Tarpon are poring in from the south into the inlets and channels along the flats offering our visiting Key West fishing anglers a shot at landing the silver king. Check out the Florida Keys Tarpon Fishing Guide web site to learn more about tarpon fishing.

It was a sad day for the Florida Keys and Key West fishing community yesterday. News spread quickly that local TV celebrity and host of the Spanish Fly died in a plane crash. Shocked friends and fans texted each other and posted RIP on Jose’s Facebook page yesterday.
The Cuban born Jose was a natural at fishing, building his career and his reputation first as a guide and later as a TV personality; but his new love in recent years was flying. He was alone on his single engine plane when it crashed in Everglades City just after take off around 4:30 pm yesterday.
“Nobody has done more for fishing in the Keys than Jose,” said Dream Catcher Charters owner Capt Steven Lamp, “you will be missed.”
Genn,
Just a quick note to let you all know that we had a great outing. I was on the South Paw with Captain Brad & his 1st mate Heath. Not only were these guys friendly & jovial but their professionalism was clearly evident in the level of preparedness of tackle, bait & boat! All day long they put forth the effort to make sure we had a great time and to give us every opportunity to catch fish. I’ve been on enough charters with other outfits to know that Team Southpaw ranks at the high end of high! I’ve attached a few pictures that sums up the day for all of us on the Southpaw!
Well, we had an unusually soggy week in Key West last week. It rained for about 5 days straight, flooding parts of the island. That means that most activities like fishing, sunset sails, and water sports tours were shut down during that time. Visitors were relegated to only hanging out at the bars like Sloppy Joe’s or visiting museums like the Hemingway House. Now that can be fun and relaxing, but after a while people surely want to get out and about. Now is the time. Weather is clear and a little breezy making the outdoors extremely comfortable this time of year in Key West.
September is a notable month for inshore fishing. The flats are alive with baby tarpon, bonefish, and permit, although there are many other species available as well such as sharks, jacks, barracuda, snook, redfish, and jack crevalles. Typically this time of year though avid flats fisherman, both spin and fly fisherman, tend to visit our area for the trifecta of tarpon, bones, and permit. I have to say that the Dream Team is doing a great job with their clients at it too.
So it is fall and the temperatures have dropped, if only very slightly, and the flats fishing game is on full speed. Tarpon, Bonefish, and Permit all around. Even with good numbers of fish around this time of year, these are some of the most challenging fish to catch. It is almost like a hunting trip, stalking the fish silently as your guide poles you down the flat.
Inshore is the name of the game this week. Tarpon fishing has been very good and offering our anglers at Dream Catcher Charters a nice start to an early morning during the shrimp hatches. Up on the flats things are solid with a great report of Permit fishing with Capt. Kyle here at Dream Catcher Charters fishing with Kevin Kelso. They landed a very nice 25++ lb permit on live bait just West of Key West.. Shown here. You can call Dream Catcher Charters directly at 1-888-362-3474 for a fishing charter.
Offshore the blue waters are way out and offering a long boat ride to some awesome dolphin fishing on flat calm days. Some fish in the 25 and 30 lb range are found along the weed lines. If looking for a deep sea fishing charter we recommend you book a boat for the long haul or the full day. Go fast center consoles are also available for a fast attack to the deep waters for 4 or less persons. Call Island Genn here at The Keys To Key West and she will help you get on the right deep sea fishing boat. Her number is 1-305-292-7212. (more…)
