The summer and fall have always been considered the offseason here in Key West, but events like Lobsterfest in August, Fantasy Fest in October, and the Super Boat Races in November bring in large numbers of people to the island. While these events are a ton of fun and inject the local economy with a much needed stimulus in slower times, the flip side for visitors is that these events mean higher that usual hotel rates and inundating the tiny island with people and cars.
But due to coronavirus, the local powers that be have cancelled all of these events for 2020 to avoid large gatherings. So, while many people are upset that these events will not be taking place this year, I am looking at the bright side and see this as a unique opportunity for those wanting to visit Key West. Especially since traveling overseas is not a thing this year.
For the first time in ages, people can come down to Key West, no passport needed, and enjoy a truly tropical atmosphere without large crowds or breaking the bank with high hotel rates. You can experience the island nearly as it once was. A peaceful atmosphere with great weather and laid back locals.
There won’t be long waits for dining out, and you can check out the local museums without a long cheque outside in the heat. Beaches won’t be overcrowded and one can really relax.
So, come to Key West this offseason and just experience some peace for a change. After what we have all dealt with in 2020 so far, I think it is well deserved!

What to do…
Everything is open activity wise, so weather you just want to chill on the beach or you want to rent a kayak or paddle board, you can do all of these things and more! For activities like fishing charters and excursions to the Dry Tortugas, I highly recommend booking these in advance. Even though the island may be quieter than usual, popular adventures like these will still sell out in advance.
