Located at MM 22.5 on Cudjoe Key, Square Grouper Bar and Grill has been a favorite restaurant of mine, and many other locals, since its opening. While the bar does not serve liquor, it has a fine list of wines and microbrews, and you will find that the bar is almost always packed with locals socializing and enjoying a unique brew, and sometimes having a bite as well. Last night we had dinner with some friends at Benihana. In case you are unfamiliar with this chain, it is a Japanese hibachi and sushi restaurant, known both for its food and the entertainment of the chefs preparing the food right in front of you.
We arrived at 6pm without reservations, and while the restaurant was practically empty, we still had to wait 25 minutes for a table. Our group sat at the bar and had a drink to pass the time. The bartender was awesome and the drinks on the menu were original and very yummy. I had a coconut sakitini which was amazing. (more…)

“Radar” Rob, Indiana Bones and I headed downtown this afternoon to grab lunch at Blue Heaven. Neither of us had been there in awhile so were were really looking forward to it. Finding parking nearby is a real pain. We ended up parking in a lot a couple of blocks away for $10, but I would suggest just take a cab and totally eliminate the pain of parking. (more…)
After picking up my husband and some friends at the airport the other night we stopped by the restaurant at Hurricane Hole Marina for a later bite to eat. In the past, the quality had been wanting, but the restaurant was recently taken over so we thought that we would try it out.
When we arrived there were only 2 people at the bar and no one seated in the outside dining area which we thought unusual, but were happy about that so that the guys could relax after a long flight. Our waiter, Matt, brought over some menus which have been completely revised since the time of our last visit. (more…)
My husband and I decided to take the motorcycle downtown this past Saturday night on the spur of the moment. When we made it downtown we decided to get a bite to eat somewhere. I suggest sushi at Origami located in Duval Square. They have parking and outdoor seating and the weather was just perfect. The food is always fresh and delicious and the setting is tropical and unpretentious. Even though they were fairly busy we found a table for two in front of the entrance. (more…)
Last night we took some visiting friends with us to Roostica Wood Fire Pizzeria for dinner. I liked it before, but they just keep getting better! The place was absolutely packed on a Sunday night, although that may have been partially due to the last game of the world series playing as there were a few locals sitting at the bar. But most people seemed to be there for the food. Sunday nights only Roostica does a Sunday Gravy, which is (more…)

Our friends Amy and Kevin are in town this week celebrating their anniversary and they invited us out to dinner with them and their son Kyle last night. Amy is an avid reader of my reviews and so she asked, “where would Island Genn go to have a nice dinner?” She decided on La Trattoria Oceanside because of my last review but also because it has a nice view, it is not downtown, it is a classy place, and has good food and service.
We had reservations for 7pm but we arrived a few minutes early. We decided to sit at the bar and have a drink before being seated at our table. La Trat, as the locals call it, is known for their martinis. But I had to be difficult and asked the bartender for a mojito which is not something he normally makes. He ran to the kitchen, got some mint, and made me a refreshing mojito even though he did not have to. (more…)
I know that I said that I would probably not be going back here due to the service I experienced last time I was there, but ZaZa Pizzeria is across the street from my house and since we were going out of town the next day we went there to get an overpriced pizza. The inside dining area is still way too loud, so we once again sat outside.
This time our waiter was really good. Yay! He kept on top of everything and was really nice. We ordered salads and pizza. Initially when ZaZa’s opened they did not have pepperoni or other traditional pizza toppings as they were not “traditional Italian” foods. But I guess due to high demand they have added pepperoni to their list of pizza toppings much to my husband’s delight. The salads were good like last time and the pizza was much better than our last experience. (more…)
Amigo’s Tortilla Bar is a fairly new restaurant located on Green Street, directly across the street from Captain Tony’s Saloon. I LOVE Mexican food so I was really excited to try this place. Amigo’s has a great location, a nice website, and a neat menu. The place is very small and seating is mostly bar style which is fine. You are not coming here for a fancy meal. We took up a few bar stools looking out at Captain Tony’s so we had a great view. The waitress came over and was friendly enough. She took our drink orders, and since I ordered the sangria she carded me. She then brought out water for us all and Cokes for those who ordered them. I asked her about the sangria then and she said it was coming. I never saw it so I cannot attest to the taste. But the Coke’s were good.
