Hurricane Hole | Review

After picking up my husband and some friends at the airport the other night we stopped by the restaurant at Hurricane Hole Marina for a later bite to eat. In the past, the quality had been wanting, but the restaurant was recently taken over so we thought that we would try it out.

When we arrived there were only 2 people at the bar and no one seated in the outside dining area which we thought unusual, but were happy about that so that the guys could relax after a long flight. Our waiter, Matt, brought over some menus which have been completely revised since the time of our last visit.

We ordered the fresh catch which was yellowtail snapper served with rice and beans, calamari, fish dip, and seared tuna which according to Matt the chef suggested. The calamari and fish dip were brought out first.

The calamari, served with a tasty marinara and cheese dipping sauce, was lightly fried to a delicious crispy texture on the outside and just the right amount of tender chewiness on the inside.

Presentation of the fish dip was pleasing. Three small scoops of fish dip were served over a bed of baby greens and accompanied by pickled onion slices and buttery toast points. The fish dip was very good as were the toast points, but together they were too rich for me and I prefer crackers with my fish dip, and Matt was happy to oblige me with my request.

The tuna, brought out next, was encrusted with sesame seeds and lightly seeded on the outside, then thinly sliced to display the beautiful red center and served with a side of soy-based dipping sauce and a pile of crispy rice noodles. The tuna itself was fresh and of fine quality, perfectly prepared and tender. It was complimented well with the sauce. The noodles were not so crispy though, and I am sure that it was due to the humidity outside, so I cannot fault them here.

The snapper was then brought out and it was slightly overdone for my taste, but it was seasoned well and the accompanying sides were good and a nice compliment.

Throughout the meal, Matt was an excellent server. He was polite, helpful with suggestions, and expedient with refills and other requests. Since we were his only table there was no excuse for anything but. I hope it is the same when they are busy.

This latest experience gives me new hope for Hurricane Hole’s restaurant and I feel that I can once again recommend it as a place to eat!
