Eggplant Stack at Roostica Wood Fire Pizzeria in Key West, Florida
Eggplant Stack

Last night we took some visiting friends with us to Roostica Wood Fire Pizzeria for dinner. I liked it before, but they just keep getting better! The place was absolutely packed on a Sunday night, although that may have been partially due to the last game of the world series playing as there were a few locals sitting at the bar. But most people seemed to be there for the food. Sunday nights only Roostica does a Sunday Gravy, which is spaghetti and meatballs and sausage family style.  They let the sauce simmer all day long and serve it with fociacca bread and a house salad. Of course they still offer their regular menu as well.

We had eyes bigger than our stomach’s last night, but it was a good thing because we got to try lots of yummy dishes. We started off with the eggplant stack, focaccia, and antipasto. The eggplant stack was beautiful and so tasty. The crispy fried eggplant was served over a marinara and perfectly paired with fresh slices of tomato and buffalo mozzarella, and topped with arugula and a balsamic glaze. The focaccia bread was warm and delicious, especially when paired with olive oil for dipping. And the antipasto was even better than the last time I ordered it. The cheeses, peppers, olives, and meats were perfect complements to each other in every way.

For dinner we ordered the figaro pizza, a specialty pizza, and the sunday gravy. The house salad had all sorts of ingredients in it like chick peas, tomatoes, mixed lettuces, peppers, and onions. It was very typical of what you would be served with dinner in an Italian house or fine restaurant, and I was very pleased with it and the simple yet delightful dressing of olive pile and balsamic vinegar. The fiagro pizza is a white pizza with dried figs, mozzarella, prosciutto, caramelized onions, and sea salt. And Oh my God it was heavenly. I have to say that if you are like my husband, you would not like this pizza. He is very meat and potatoes and that is why he ordered a specialty pizza with red sauce, salami, mushrooms, mozzarella, and bacon which was slightly spicy and quite enjoyable. We also enjoyed the Sunday Gravy. The meatballs and sausage were very good. I like a meatball that is not to dense, and this one was not. It was firm and you could taste the pork mixed in. Very good. The prefer my spaghetti a little more al dente, but it was still mouthwatering.

Since we already gorged ourselves with so many things, I had to try dessert too. I ordered a cappuccino and the cheesecake. The cappuccino was pleasingly full bodied, and I did not feel the need to sweeten it up. The cheesecake was rich and flavorful, topped with some berries and fruit which proved to be the perfect accompaniment.

In addition we also had drinks; I had a glass of Flirt with my meal, and the rest of the crew all had a few beers each, as Roostica has a nice selection of domestics, imports, and craft beers. The bill came out to around $150 which I thought was quite affordable for so much food. Service was good, especially considering that it was so busy. The waitress was helpful with suggestions and she was attentive to our table so we never had to wait for anything that we needed.
