Everyone who is a dog person has a favorite breed, and mine happens to be the Maltese. They are small yet sturdy and strikingly cute with snow white hair contrasting with alert black eyes and nose. When we got our Maltese seven years ago we named him Indiana Bones. He happens to accompany me almost everywhere now. He is compact enough to carry around if I need to and he is also not intimidating like some bigger dog breeds can be. Plus, he does not drool or shed, so no mess! And he is far better behaved than most children that I see out with their families nowadays.
Some of Indiana’s favorite places to join me are dog friendly restaurants like Hogfish Bar and Grill, Croissants de France and La Creperie. He can sit outside at the table with me and enjoy his own plate of bacon that I order just for him. And the staff are so friendly towards him.
He also loves it when we make a bank run. Not only does he get a ton of attention, but he typically gets a treat too that he looks forward to as soon as he realizes where we are.
Walking down the White Street Pier and at the dog park there is also fun for my little guy. Here he can get his exercise while attracting lots of admiring attention which he lives for.
Some dogs love to swim, but my little guy does not. Maybe it is because the Maltese’s long hair just makes it uncomfortably difficult. But Indiana Bones does love playing around on the beach and running through the surf. And boating is a fun time for him too, as long as we allow him a pit stop on longer days.
Special events are also fun for him. Indie has accompanied us to parades and festivals galore. Luckily for me, Indie is not in the least bit frightened by loud noises, so taking him with me to noisy events like parades presents no issues for us.
And of course he goes to work with me every day. He is the official greeter at Dream Catcher Charters and my companion while everyone is working in their office, the beautiful waters of Key West.
Key West is a very dog tolerant destination, and I highly recommend taking your dog with you if you are traveling here. Many of our island accommodations are pet friendly, and with so many places to enjoy with your pet, why leave him or her behind?
It may seem a bit silly to some people that I bring him nearly everyplace with me, but little dogs like Indiana Bones were specially bred to be companions and always around people. Separation anxiety can be all but eliminated in a pet friendly place like Key West. Plus he is so friendly and easy to travel with, why would I not take him everywhere I am able to? And people love him; many times I hear greetings of “Hey Indie!” without even being addressed myself. He is like a little rock star.
