Paradise Pups

My Maltese, Indiana Bones, is small and well behaved and he loves to go places with me as much as I like taking him places. So, we are pretty much always together. For this reason, my husband has taken to calling him my daemon (like in the Golden Compass). For me, one of the nicest things about Key West is that it is a rather dog friendly place. A number of rental houses, inns, restaurants and shops will welcome you and your pup heartily.

When walking around Duval Street, many of the shops receive Indie and I. Even prominent art galleries like Wyland and Lik and upscale shops like Coach welcome us warmly. Of course, there are a few places that don’t take well to the canine persuasion. But hey, I guess not everyone can be a dog lover.

My Key West Dog Friendly Picks

My favorite dog friendly restaurant is a tough decision. But, Indie does not seem to have a preference here. I guess I’d have to say that Banana Cafe on Duval Street is my favorite breakfast spot to take my pooch. The seating outside on the rooftop in the winter, spring, and fall is a particularly fun place to people watch. And the food is always awesome! Indie loves their bacon and eggs. For lunch or dinner, the Hogfish Bar and Grill or The Docks, both on Front Street on Stock Island are great places to eat with your pooch. These casual places both have good food. The Snapper Philly at the Docks is awesome and the Hogfish sandwich at the aptly named Hogfish is amazing.

As for Indie’s favorite hotel, Ocean’s Edge Resort & Marina is very doggie friendly. He likes to dine in the restaurant and walk along the docks with us. There is even a doggie area so that he can run around and play if he wants to.

Most importantly, Indie’s favorite activity is going out with Toon Time Charters for sandbar trip and some sightseeing. Being a Keys dog, he adores being on boats and in the water too. And, Toon Time is small dog friendly. Their Barletta Tritoon is 27′ of floating comfort with tons of shade, doggie view windows and even a built in doggie water bowl! How cool is that!
